Dan Garrett
Beckoning the Ancient Vision Weaving myth and history, Dan Garrett parts the mists of time to allow us to peer into a world full of mystery and adventure. Stepping beyond the recent past, to a time when the world, and man, was younger, he takes us to a place in which primal instincts and unseen forces ruled the earth. Dan's interest is in representing in bronze, the mythological and archaeological aspects of historic and pre historic man from western North America. Particularly interested in the life of these people, especially those from the high plains area, Dan says, "It amazes me and gives me deep respect for these people, the Paleo- Indians, that they could survive year round out on the open prairie with only primitive technology and the small support groups that they had to work with”.
This intense, talented man began his fine arts career as a painter, then, intrigued by the challenges of three dimensions, tackled and conquered clay, wood and bronze to depict his favorite subject, Native Americans. Each bronze sculpture's colorful patina is personally designed by the artist, and each base is oiled and waxed with a method similar to that used to create fine handmade furniture.
Dan was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1949. His education includes majoring in Fine Art at the University of Wyoming, and self taught study in sculpture and patinas. He attended various sculpture workshops taught by the renowned sculptor Ed Fraughton, and also studied anatomy at the Zahourek Institute's Anatomkin classes. The more he studied his subject, the more involved he became in the deep, unrecorded past.
Dan has won numerous awards in art shows throughout the Rocky Mountain region. His sculpture "The Raider" was selected for the Museum Purchase Award at the 1999 Cheyenne Frontier Days Western Art Show. This sculpture joins the permanent collection of The Old West Museum in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He has been selected to jury several regional and national art shows, having several times served as a juror for the Loveland High Plains Art Council's Sculpture in the Park in Loveland, Colorado, as well as the Western Spirit Art Show, Cheyenne, Wyoming. Dan has been invited to participate in many invitation only shows, among them the Cheyenne Frontier Days Governor's Invitational Art Show, the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition Western Art Show, Charleston, South Carolina, Bob & Inna Eubanks' Peppertree Ranch Art Show, Santa Ynez, California, the Royal American Art Show, Kansas City, Missouri, the Loveland High Plains Art Council's Sculpture in the Park Invitational, Loveland, Colorado, the Albuquerque Art Museum Miniatures Show, Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Nicolaysen Museum Art Auction, Casper, Wyoming, the Sedona Sculpture Walk, Sedona Arizona and the Cantigny Gardens Sculpture in the Gardens show in Chicago, Illinois.
Garrett's award winning work is included in private, corporate, and public museum collections across the country, and around the world. The cachet of mystery, of the unknown, provides a magnetic allure to Dan's work among collectors, as though by studying and living with the art, they might become intuitively aware of the secrets of the past. Private collectors include Wyoming Governor Jim Geringer, King Carlos of Spain, and actress Connie Stevens as well as others in England, Scotland, Sweden, Portugal, Rome, Japan, Taiwan and Mexico. His work is also in the corporate collections of Firestone and Key Bank. Publicly his work is shown by the Leanin' Tree Museum of Western Art in Boulder, Colorado, Old West Museum in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and the Jung Museum of Fine Art in Albany, New York.
